In late May, our school had one thing on it's mind... that is 70's! From soft rock, disco, to country, a variety of genres and singers made the 70's an unforgettable era.
Glitz, Glamour, Disco! 70's hits still live on, from The Bee Gee's, to Fleetwood Mac, to John Denver. The Variety Show was our take on the 70's as we were all given 3 songs and told to recreate the 70's vibes. Stylish costumes and glittering makeup, weeks of rehearsal and new friendships along the way resulted in a show we were all proud of.
This year, I finally had the courage to escape from my comfort zone and shine. To my surprise, I was given two solos! I was the lead singer to 'Lady Marmalade' by Labelle and I also sang as Sandy in "You're the one that I want" from Grease with a very dear friend of mine. Singing these songs were eye opening- I could finally showcase this talent I felt like I had. Being onstage was such a special moment for me. It built my self confidence immensely and helped me grow as a young musician.
Once the Variety Show ended, I felt like a brand new me. I was confident, I had made new friends, and I was struck with newfound love for 70's music! This was a such crazy experience for me. I remember singing "You're the one that I want" with my duet partner, and not even being able to look him in the eye! Now, I'm more confident than I ever imagined myself to be.
I hope I can inspire you to try new things and step our of your comfort zone every once in awhile. Never let your fear or insecurity hold you back from pursuing your passions or trying new things. I made that mistake and overcoming my fear was the best decision I ever made. Go out today and try something new because life begins at the end of your comfort zone.
