Bird Set Free

Bird Set Free
“And I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I shout it out like a bird set free”
— Sia

My apologies for this post being ridiculously late- I've been so caught up in school and homework and extracurriculars, and life has ultimately gotten in the way of what I love.

The month of February was spent indulging in one of the most enjoyable and blissful aspects of my life, music. I attended two incredible choir festivals, hosted at beautiful schools in the Middle East and filled with diverse, yet unified groups of talented individuals.

My fondness of music has always been quite fervent, but these trips solidified my overwhelming love. I have fallen in love with the feeling of embracing symphonies with others. Singing in a choir offers us the chance to collectively showcase our abilities, whilst our individuality shines through the melodies our hearts proudly belt.

The first music festival I attended was hosted in Doha, Qatar. The highlight of this trip was the overall warmth the host school, family, and students offered to us. I met some of the most genuine souls at this choir festival, and discovered friends I will truly cherish for the rest of my life. Musically, I could feel myself growing as a performer, however the value of this trip lies with it's people, and the musical memories I created with my companions- we loved, and we laughed, and we sang for ourselves, our own enjoyment and our own contentment, as if we were birds, set free.

The second music festival I attended was hosted in Muscat, Oman. On this trip, I had the opportunity to reunite with some of the friends I had made earlier in the month when I went to Doha. I feel like this trip was far more solitary for me. I made new friends and reconnected with old ones, but this trip contributed towards my genuine adoration for music. From the gorgeous repertoire, our legendary, and inspiring conductor, to the beautiful theater we performed in, I couldn't have been happier with the festival. We laughed, and we cried, and we sang our hearts out. This trip helped me discover that music expresses what cannot be put into words. Singing makes us feel. It envelopes us, until we're embedded in resonant messages and comforting warmth.

I hope that my overwhelming happiness and ease expressed in this post will resonate with you. Regardless if you're a music nerd like myself, everybody has their hobbies, their own escapes from the hectic insanity of daily life. Music is my escape. What's yours?
